Why should I join The Skating Club of Vail?

U.S. Figure Skating is organized through member clubs like The Skating Club of Vail.  Membership in SCV provides skaters with all of the benefits of a USFSA membership, including a) eligibility to compete in USFSA sanctioned competitions; b) eligibility to test in front of USFSA qualified testing panels (at certain levels of SCV membership); c) a subscription to Skating Magazine.   In addition, The Skating Club of Vail’s membership provides benefits such as:

  • Annual Competitive and Non-Competitive Scholarships

  • Winter Ice Show Assistance Fund

  • Annual Banquet

  • Annual Ice Show and other exhibitions or clinics

  • Annual Vail Invitational - SCV’s home rink competition

  • USFSA Test Sessions - Quarterly

  • Annual SCV apparel piece

  • Various social events & volunteer opportunities

Which membership class is right for me?

The Skating Club of Vail maintains many membership classes to serve the various needs of our skaters.  Introductory 1 and 2 membership are offered at a low cost to allow skaters to compete at the basic skills/free skate level.  When competitive skaters are ready to take their pre-preliminary test, they must join (with a parent/legal guardian, if under 18)  at the Full Membership/Family Membership level.  A college-bound skater may choose a 4-year Collegiate membership.  Skating enthusiasts and parents who do not skate may join as a Supporting membership.  Professional memberships are available for our coaches.  Please refer to the detailed descriptions of membership classes for a list of privileges and responsibilities associated with each.

Can I join The Skating Club of Vail anytime during the year?

Membership applications are accepted throughout the membership year (July 1 - June 30).  Some skaters, usually new members at the Basic Skills level, will choose to join in the Spring to compete in certain competitions.  Please be aware, however, that dues are not pro-rated.

What are my membership dues used for?

The majority of membership dues go toward USFSA membership fees.  The remaining amounts are used to pay for SCV’s club ice, social events, and miscellaneous operating expenses.

I have a beginner skater, do I need to join The Skating Club of Vail?

Joining SCV provides beginning skaters the opportunity to participate in competitions and become part of a skating community.  Skaters who have never been a member of a club may join SCV as Introductory-1st year member and as an Introductory-2nd year member the following year before joining at full membership fee.

Why is the Introductory-2nd year more than the Introductory-1st year dues?

The Introductory-1st year and 2nd-year fees cover only the cost of USFSA membership plus a small amount to cover SCV’s administrative expenses to process and maintain the membership.  USFSA offers a discount only for the first year of membership; therefore, SCV must charge more for Introductory-2nd year memberships to cover the expense of USFSA fees.

What if my Introductory skater needs to test during the membership year?

An introductory-1st year and Introductory-2nd year may test during the membership year upon payment of a $70 Introductory Member Testing Fee, along with the fees associated with the test your skater wishes to take.  You and your skater would then need to renew at the Full membership level for the following membership year.

I have a competitive skater who is under 18 and tests at a pre-preliminary level or above.  Which membership should I choose?

The Skating Club of Vail requires an adult family member/legal guardian to join with each minor skater who tests at the pre-preliminary level or above.  The skater will need to join as a Full member and as the adult, you will need to join as a Supporting member.

I have two skaters under 18 who compete and test.  Which membership should I choose?

One skater will need to join as a Full Member, the second skater joins as a Family member, and as the adult, you will need to join as a Supporting member.

Why does The Skating Club of Vail need volunteers?

The Skating Club of Vail is an active club and needs many volunteers for its testing, competition, ice show, skate swap, skate camp, banquet, and other events.  Accordingly, we ask all club members to help out.  In addition, volunteering is a great way to meet other skating friends and parents.  Please note that some volunteer positions require SafeSport training and/or background checks.

What if I don’t have time to Volunteer?

The Skating Club of Vail is exclusively volunteer-run; therefore, we strongly encourage your participation whenever you are available.  Some volunteer opportunities simply require donating food or other goods for events.  You are able to opt-out of volunteering for a fee.

May I continue to participate in The Skating Club of Vail even after my skater is done skating?

Yes!  The Skating Club of Vail welcomes skating enthusiasts to join and participate as Supporting members.  Please note that some volunteer positions require SafeSport training and background checks.
